What do you think about when someone says, God? What particular image or picture comes to mind? Over the years I have heard many descriptions of “God”. Often people relate God to movies they have seen.
One gentleman said he believed God was like the Force in Star Wars. God was an energy field that flowed in and through all things binding them together.
A lady said she believed God was more like Gandalf from Lord of the Rings. He was a kind old fellow who always had a treat for children and really just wanted to sit around and smoke his leaf.
A total stranger told me that he thought God was perfectly displayed by George Burns. He’s very old and loves to smoke cigars.
Some people think God is like Tim Allen’s portrayal of Santa Clause. You climb up on his knee and tell him everything you want in life. If you are good he will grant your wish and if you are bad he won’t.
Others see God more like Morgan Freeman or Anthony Hopkins or any number of other actors who have played God or gods over the years.
Some people just go completely blank. They don’t believe that God exists and if he does he is unknown to them.
What do you think about when someone says God? Think carefully because your answer is one of the most important you will ever have. You answer affects everything about you. How you spend your time and money. How you relate to other people. It affects your moral code and every other area of your life. Even if you don’t believe in God that too affects the person you are.
When I was growing up I pictured God as a scorekeeper. There were angels flying around with large quill pens and they were keeping track of everything I did. If I have enough good deeds then I would go to heaven. But, if I did too many bad things then I would go to the other place. I didn’t want to go there.
Over the next few blogs I will use the Bible to help us understand who God is and what he is like. It is very important that we know him.
And this is the way to have eternal life, by knowing you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth! John 17:3
So that being the case, we want to know Him. I look forward to taking this journey with you. I believe the Bible is clear on this subject. We can know for sure and we can say with complete confidence, “This Is Our God”.
